Understanding Your Skin Concerns

A comprehensive guide to the most common skin concerns on African skin, their causes, and practical ingredient-led solutions.

Common concerns, causes, and solutions

1. Acne and Breakouts
An inflammatory condition caused by hair follicles clogged with excess oil, dead skin, and bacteria. It is the most common concern in Kenya and is often driven by hormones, diet, and stress.
On African Skin
Every active pimple carries a significantly higher risk of leaving a dark mark (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation or PIH) that can last 6 to 12 months.
Effective Ingredients
Salicylic acidNiacinamide 10%Azelaic acidBenzoyl peroxide 2.5%
What to Avoid
Heavy creamsCoconut oilPhysical scrubs
2. Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots
The darkening of specific areas due to excess melanin production, triggered by sun exposure, inflammation, or hormonal changes.
On African Skin
This is the number one concern for African skin. PIH is more intense and longer-lasting, often taking 6 to 18 months to fade.
Effective Ingredients
Alpha arbutinTranexamic acidNiacinamideSaffron extractSPF 50
What to Avoid
Kojic acid soap barsHigh-percentage hydroquinone without professional guidance
3. Skin Texture and Roughness
A loss of surface quality caused by dead skin cell buildup, dehydration, or scarring.
On African Skin
Naturally thicker outer layers mean dead skin cells accumulate faster. Gentle exfoliation is key, as harsh scrubs can cause micro-tears and more pigmentation.
Effective Ingredients
Glycolic acid (AHA)Lactic acidNiacinamideRetinol
4. Oiliness and Excess Sebum
Overactive glands produce too much sebum. A common myth is that oily skin does not need moisturizer; in reality, most oily skin is dehydrated and overproduces oil to compensate.
On African Skin
Genetics and the warm Nairobi climate can intensify oil production. Using a gel moisturizer is essential.
Effective Ingredients
Niacinamide 10%Salicylic acidZinc
5. Dryness and Dehydration
Dry skin (a skin type lacking oil) and dehydrated skin (a condition lacking water) are different.
On African Skin
Dehydration is extremely common and causes melanin-rich skin to appear ashy.
Effective Ingredients
Hyaluronic acidCeramidesGlycerinSqualane
What to Avoid
Alcohol-based tonersHarsh sulfate cleansers
6. Enlarged Pores
Tiny openings that appear larger due to excess oil, clogs, or loss of skin elasticity.
On African Skin
Higher sebum production often leads to larger visible pores in the T-zone. They can be refined, but not permanently shrunk.
Effective Ingredients
Salicylic acidNiacinamideWeekly clay masks
7. Wrinkles and Fine Lines
Creases caused by the reduction of collagen and elastin.
On African Skin
This is generally the least urgent concern. Melanin and higher collagen density typically delay visible wrinkles by 10 to 20 years compared to lighter skin tones.

8. Dark Circles and Eye Area
Shadows or discoloration beneath the eyes, where skin is thinnest.
On African Skin
Unlike lighter skin where circles are often vascular, dark circles on African skin are predominantly pigmentation-based.
Effective Ingredients
Vitamin C eye serumCaffeinePDRN
9. Sensitive and Reactive Skin
Skin that reacts intensely to products or the environment. It is often actually damaged skin with a compromised barrier.
On African Skin
Sensitivity is often undiagnosed because redness is less visible. It usually presents as burning sensations or darkening in irritated areas.

10. Dull Skin and Lack of Radiance
A flat, lifeless appearance caused by dehydration, dead cell buildup, or stress.
On African Skin
Healthy, well-cared-for melanin-rich skin has unique warmth and depth. When dull, it often takes on a distinctive grey-brown ashy tone.
